A Guide to 3D Printing

3D printing was first developed in 1980’s but what could be achieved then is incomparable to 3D printing today. Primitive 3D printers were extremely expensive, very big and what could be produced was seriously limited. Despite the slow start it was clear that 3D printers had a lot of potential and today 3D printing is one of the most exciting technologies around.

The process is more straightforward than you might think. 3D printers print objects layer upon layer. Each layer is extremely thin - as little as 16 microns. Working from the bottom up, the layers gradually build up to form solid, 3D objects. The main benefit of this approach is that there is virtually no limit to the detail and complexity of your desired object.

3D Printing Applications

The almost limitless applications of 3D printers have led to their use in a wide range of industries and fields. The defence, medical and automotive sectors all use 3D printing technology to develop their products and create accurate models of entire objects and smaller parts. In fact, most industrially designed products are created on a 3D printer during the prototype stage. The range of materials available allows for prototypes that are not only visually accurate but are also similar to the target product in terms of touch, feel and flexibility. Universities and other academic institutions also use 3D printers widely for education and research.

With our Stratasys 3D printers models can now be created in a matter of HOURS, not days, weeks or months. You can simply create your design using computer aided design software and let the printer do the rest.
